Foundation is one of the essential parts of a natural makeup routine. With the right foundation, a man can smooth out his skin tone and look younger without much effort. Here is an overview of the who, what, where, when, why, and how of using foundation for men.
Anybody can use foundation! Traditionally, it has only been acceptable in the United States for women (and actors) to use makeup of any kind. This attitude is changing, as shown by the many popular YouTube beauty and makeup artists who are men [Check out Carl Cunard or Wesley Benjamin Carter, for example]. Natural makeup has become very popular for men who are determined to look their best. Certainly, if you don’t mind what the haters say (my personal recommendation) you can do whatever you want regarding makeup.
Foundation is a staple of any makeup set. After concealer is used to cover up specific spots or blemishes, foundation can be used to smooth out your complexion. It can even be used on its own, without concealer or other kinds of makeup, because if done correctly, it simply blends into your face and is not very noticeable. If you haven’t used foundation before and are unsure of which kind to buy, here is a short run down of the kinds of foundation.
Powder foundation: This is a dry powder that is applied using a brush or sponge. It is not too hard to apply and has a classic look. Powder foundation can help mask oily skin, and so if that is one of your considerations, you might want to choose a powder to start with.
Liquid foundation: This kind is my personal preference. Overall, it is easier to use and harder to mess up. I use liquid foundation everyday and would recommend this kind to anyone who is starting to use makeup for the first time.
Foundation should be applied all over your face. Whereas you only apply other makeup to certain facial features or problem spots, you should apply a thin layer of foundation across your entire face. This will help your face look smooth and will help any other makeup that you apply on top of it look better.
You can use foundation whenever you want. My recommendation is to use some foundation and concealer if you had a late night and want to cover the dark spots under your eyes. You could also use some foundation if you are going to have pictures of yourself take and want to look your best. You can also use foundation if you are going out and simply want to look nice and attract positive attention. The situation that you will be in can help dictate how much makeup you want to use.
To help you boost your confidence and to look better. Why else?
If you are using a powder, you should apply the foundation using a makeup brush. Be sure that you don’t use too much. It is easier to apply another layer than it is to take a layer off. Apply the foundation thinly and blend it well using the brush. If you are having a hard time getting it to blend, then you should also try using a makeup sponge. After you have blended the foundation as best you can, use the makeup sponger to further blend until it looks natural.
If you are using a liquid foundation, you should use a makeup sponge to blend. First, apply a small dot of foundation either directly on your face or on the sponge. Using small circular movements, rub and blend the foundation across your face. If you need more, then apply another small dot and continue blending.
